Cheeni’s is helmed by a husband-&-wife team who honour their culinary heritage: Hubby specialises in banana leaf rice and south Indian recipes in a tribute to his late mother Cheeni, while his wife seeks to serve Peranakan recipes from her own family. For now, only the former is available; expect Nyonya-style nasi ulam, ayam pongteh and buah keluak to emerge later.







This new restaurant is off to a satisfactory start – a daily-changing assortment of meat and veggies can be selected for your banana leaf rice meal, which may include the likes of mint squid, mutton varuval, fish head curry, tauhu sambal and brinjal kuttu. Our flavoursome meal for two, complete with textured, fresh-tasting components, plus two protein sides and lassi beverages (one subtly tinged with beetroot, the other with pomegranate), clocked in at RM52. Not a bad bet for banana leaf hunters.
