Review: WIP on the Park
April 28th, 2025
It’ll be the end of an era soon at Terrace At Hock Choon; for the past six years, this venue has housed a Japanese restaurant – first, Fukuharu ran for four years & thrilled customers with mentaiko tamago sushi. Then came Machi, which later handed the baton in 2014 to The Kobe. But by the end of this coming May, The Kobe is set to leave too, with no successor in sight so far.
The next several weeks may supply the final opportunity for customers to have a meal of fruit-topped maki, salmon belly in ponzu sauce, wagyu beef fried rice & all things Japanese at Terrace At Hock Choon, a garden site that showcased so much potential when it was born way back in 2009. We remember good dinners here at the Terrace’s restaurants like il Divo, IR1968 & Romanza – all are long gone now; La Mexicana looks to be the final hold-out at Terrace At Hock Choon for now.
The Kobe hopes to move to greener pastures, still within Ampang – by mid-2015, this outlet plans to bring its oyster omelettes & red snapper heads farther up the road, to the Nihonkan Club building that formerly hosted The Pool. The Kobe is likely to occupy Nihonkan’s entire building, with multiple spaces for teppanyaki bars, beer gardens & more. Something to watch out for.
