Review: WIP on the Park
April 28th, 2025
Yet another Thai street-food treat is set to make its Malaysian breakthrough this year: Independent newbie Sangkaya Creamery is bringing locally made, Chatuchak-influenced coconut ice cream to the sultry streets of KL, hoping to lure the kind of long lines that have blessed the similarly Bangkok-inspired Boat Noodle.
We visited Sangkaya’s first stand on Jalan Alor in early June; in the weeks since then, our helpful, trusty spies have spotted these stalls in guerilla-style pop-ups & night bazaars all over town, from Bangsar to Damansara Heights to Jalan Gasing, Cheras to Sri Petaling to SS2. But the only place to find them nightly for now is along Jalan Alor (more on the exact location in awhile).
The menu is kept short, simple & wallet-pleasing: Splurge on the Signature (RM7.90) for Sangkaya in its full, four-scoop glory.
Sangkaya has been relatively low-profile so far, but expect these half-shell pleasures to pop up eventually on your timelines. Filled with ice cream made with coconut milk instead of cow’s milk, it’s exactly what most folks might want coconut ice cream to taste like. Coconuts, totally transformed into ice cream, with a clean & clear flavour.
Texturally persuasive too _ not as smooth as, say, gelato, but still richer than sorbets, cushioned thickly with coconut flakes to form the perfect partnership for an evening’s refreshment.
Basic toppings of roasted peanuts, sweet corn, Nestum cereal & kidney beans won’t steal the show from the star attraction. We hope that other options _ attap chee, sticky rice & more _ will be offered once the brand matures.
Tip: Remember to specifically request the coconut husk. The first time we ordered, we received a plain cup instead.
Teh tarik ice cream is also available at the Alor location. Not bad, but not the real reason to head here.
Look for Sangkaya midway through the street, opposite Restoran Beh Brothers. It operates every evening, 6pm-1am.
