Review: Glasshouse, Mahsa + The Owl & The Pussycat, UM

Don’t call ’em cafeterias; here’s a peek at two new college-based cafes that could very nearly be considered hipster hangouts, beginning with the sunshine-blessed Glasshouse at Petaling Jaya’s Mahsa University campus.

1. Glasshouse Cafe

Tell security that you’re heading to this cafe & there should be no trouble with access (though parking on the street outside the campus could be problematic). Glasshouse is worth a stop; its interesting set-up is ideal for seeing-&-being-seen motivations …

… & the leafy perspectives beyond these tall windows could encourage calm contemplation if the cafe’s not too crowded.

Bakeries

Glasshouse this week started serving wraps & sandwiches; pastries & cakes were offered when we visited earlier this month.

Coffee

Naturally, there’s coffee, which starts at RM5 for a long black & RM7 for lattes.

Final Thoughts on Glasshouse

Glasshouse has the goods to lure not merely Mahsa’s students but visitors from the outside world too. Let’s wish them luck.

2. The Owl and the Pussycat

Only a few minutes’ drive from Glasshouse, there’s The Owl And The Pussycat Cafe, a more spacious destination inside Universiti Malaya.

Cute & colourful, The Owl And The Pussycat Cafe seems to be run by the management of PJ’s Kokopelli Bistro.

Food

We tried visiting on a weekend afternoon, since parking’s breezier, but The Owl And The Pussycat Cafe operates only a skeleton crew then with limited food offerings. Best to head here on weekdays for lunch if possible.

The Owl And The Pussycat Cafe’s menu is a mishmash of everything, with something for everyone (hopefully) at relatively affordable rates. Prawn pasta salads (RM4.50), beef pizza (RM3 per slice), roast chicken sandwich (RM3.50), nasi lemak (RM3), pasta aglio olio (RM6), beef burgers (RM5) & more.
