Celebrate a Peranakan Christmas: A Fusion of Tradition and Festivity

We had the pleasure of being invited to the Santa Grand Signature Kuala Lumpur, and we couldn’t imagine a more fitting name for an early Christmas celebration!

Kapitan Café at Santa Grand Signature offers a cozy, stylish setting paired with delicious dishes that perfectly capture the essence of modern Peranakan flavours. Peranakan food, or Nyonya cuisine, is a delicious mix of Chinese and Malay flavours, packed with spices and rich ingredients. Dishes like laksa and ayam buah keluak are known for their bold, tasty combination of sweet, spicy, and savoury goodness. Christmas is a time for family, love, and togetherness, and what better way to celebrate than by showcasing the rich flavours of this culture through its food?

The chefs at Kapitan Café are masters of their craft, infusing every dish with a delightful mix of spices – just right for a flavourful Peranakan Christmas celebration. The restaurant was decorated with a blend of Christmas ornaments and traditional Peranakan elements, featuring Christmas trees adorned with festive decorations, alongside traditional Nyonya kueh (cakes) and special Peranakan dishes.

We experienced a holiday-themed culinary journey featuring dishes such as Peranakan mango bibik with cucumber salad, Nyonya Laksa, rich with coconut milk and a hint of spice, spicy Buttermilk Prawns – a flavourful twist to a seafood classic – and other festive treats like minute steak striploin beef with creamy rendang sauce. We absolutely loved the bold, rich flavours of this dish. Desserts like the traditional yule log cake and panna cotta were accompanied by a few very tasty local mini-cakes. Santa Grand Signature wanted to show off their modern take on Peranakan cuisine, and they totally nailed it!

The culinary team at Santa Grand Signature Kuala Lumpur promises an exquisite menu this Christmas, featuring even more Peranakan favourites, including Tamarind Roast Chicken, Peranakan Lamb Soup, and Chicken Terrine. Vegetarian options will also be available, ensuring that everyone can partake in the celebration.

For those craving Peranakan flavours beyond the buffet, Santa Grand Signature presents exclusive Christmas take-away boxes. Choose from a whole roasted chicken or a roasted leg of lamb, both infused with rich Peranakan spices. The take-away boxes are priced at RM178 for the roasted chicken and RM370 for the roasted leg of lamb, catering for two or three people. That’s great value!
