We’re floored by Flour: Meet our favourite new North Indian eatery in KL, helmed by husband-and-wife team Yogesh and Natasha, in a tribute to Yogesh’s restaurateur father.

Natasha, a Malaysian, fell in love with her Mumbai-born soulmate’s cooking, and it’s easy to comprehend why: This is the most compelling biryani we’ve experienced in recent times, impeccably prepared to convey soulfully nuanced flavours and moist, fluffy textures, balanced with chunks of beautifully marinated chicken. Eat it on its own or with some raita; it’s one of Bukit Damansara’s best bets for RM18 – this is knock-your-socks-off, no-regrets biryani.

Vegetarian thali

Papadum, not pauperdom: Flour’s vegetarian thali costs a wallet-friendly RM15, a bargain considering how captivating it is. The selection on the platter changes everyday, but everything on it exceeded our expectations, with firm basmati rice, lovingly spiced black chickpeas, masala potatoes, dal and house-made fresh yogurt combining for a richly fulfilling meal (offered for lunch only).

Curries

We also love the Hyderabad-origin Lasooni Gosht (RM20), comprising mutton cooked in garlic curry for several hours (the meat is achingly tender and tastes excellent), and the Ajwaini Baingan (RM15), with luscious eggplant in creamy brown curry. The Makhani Dal (RM15) is less of a show-stopper, but the subtleties in the recipe still make each mouthful worth pondering.

Indian breads

With a name like Flour, it’s clear the restaurant regards its bread seriously, with choices like light, airy puri (RM4; our top pick), layered lachha paratha (RM5), sesame kulcha (RM5) and chapati-style phulka (RM6 with kaya and butter for a Malaysian twist) –  satisfactory, though not the standouts of our meal.

If you’re here for dinner, the highlight is a DIY barbecue, where customers grill skewers of chicken, mutton, fish, prawns, paneer and vegetables at their own table; the feast is complemented by delicious dips in flavours like garlic, lentil, mint-coriander, mustard and peanut.

Drinks

Flour also recommends its cha; try the ginger tea boiled with milk (RM4) and masala brewed black cha (RM5; with whole leaves instead of powdered tea). A message on the wall of this venue reads ‘Dedication. Commitment. Discipline’ – Flour shows evidence of all that in work that its founders can be proud of.
