Sushi Kinmedai heralds the first KL offshoot of a family of restaurants that includes Tokyo’s Roppongi Taira, Shirokane Taira and Yakitori Taira; the brand also operates Sushi Mairu at KLIA’s Mitsui Outlet Park, with seafood here sourced from Tsukiji market and handled by Sushi Kinmedai’s resident Japanese chef.

Nigiri course

The ideal introduction to Kinmedai might be the Nigiri Course (RM148), showcasing 10 pieces of the chef’s personal selection of sushi (likely including the restaurant’s namesake Splendid Alfonsino, with other cuts like tuna belly among the remaining highlights), with a made-to-order hand roll, kobachi salad starter, chawanmushi, omelette, miso soup and basic dessert to round out the meal. The food might not necessarily inflame passions, but everything proves proficiently prepared from start to finish.

The selection is varied enough that customers can go big with a premium omakase blow-out that features 16 pieces of sushi with the works (RM338), or keep the cost more moderate with a bara chirashi don set (RM49; available as a lunch special). Sushi can be ordered by individual pieces too, ranging from tai (RM9) and kanpachi (RM13) to hotate (RM22) and awabi (RM58).
