Heineken Crowns Malaysian Bartender as Its Global Draught Champion
December 12th, 2024
This is an independent review by the staff of EatDrink.my. Thanks to the team at Just Heavenly for the complimentary meal.
After years of selling food out of their mums’ kitchen, friends Nigel and Allan decided to open Just Heavenly as a café which offers an extensive selection of western styled dishes that range from experimental to classics. Conscious about the ingredients used – and owing to that spirit of experimentation, again – many of the elements used in their recipes are made in-house such as yogurt, baked beans, sauces and even ricotta cheese.
There’s now a new menu at this cheerful establishment and if you’ve never been there before, hopefully these new treats will inspire you to get a move on.
A crunchy, spicy, snack that would fit well in any bar is the Popcorn Pollo (RM17). The café’s version of popcorn chicken with an Asian twist in the spices and liberal amounts of garlic is surely something I could munch on all day – but perhaps I’d avoid kissing anyone after snacking on these morsels of goodness as the garlic flavour is very intense.
Pies are featured front and centre on this new menu, all encased in delicately flaky puff pastry. The Growl (RM28) is constructed with flavourful minced beef, impossibly crunchy onion rings and a side of creamy mash which complements the beef – a classic combination.
Another pie is the Asian inspire Curryeggy (RM26), which is a play on the Japanese Karage. This pie holds at its centre a creamy and mildly spicy chicken curry with tender morsels of chicken and a strong, yet pleasant, coconut flavour. Served with egg yolk sauce and crunchy curry leaves, this pie will surely tempt many curry fans.
There are vegetarian options as well such as the quiche-like Catcher in the Pie (RM16) and a roasted vegetable terrine called Vege the Vegan (RM19) which is wrapped in a thin savoury jelly and is served with house-made pesto and focaccia bread sticks.
Nigel and Allan are both avid bakers so the desserts selection is impressive as well. The bakery-café display is full of beautifully decorated cupcakes, individual cakes, and cakes which you can by whole or in slices. Popular choices are the Red Velvet, signature Choc and Cheese (chocolate fudge cake with cream cheese topping) and the inventive Chocolate Durian.
Here, the spirit experimentation and playfulness is also evident in their loaves. The Rosemary Sea Salt loaf is my personal favourite; the butter loaf is elevated by a rosemary syrup which keeps it moist and a generous sprinkling of flaked sea salt. The earthy rosemary pairs beautifully with the sea salt and buttery loaf to create a sweet dessert with strong herbaceous notes.
Other loaves to check out are the Earl Grey and Orange as well as the Nutella loaf which is constructed with house-made Nutella (made with Madagascan chocolate).
As for drinks, you could opt for fresh juice or some fine tea. Just Heavenly is supplied by Jing Tea which is well known for its quality of loose leaf teas. If you’d like, the waiters can offer some pairing suggestions as well. Thanks to Just Heavenly for having me.
