Review: Ekkamai Thai Kitchen

It looks like a waffle, it might even smell like a waffle, but it’s not exactly your everyday waffle: This cheerful, family-run cafe promises a unique proposition – Taiwanese-inspired waffle-shaped desserts made with milk & glutinous rice flour, instead of baking powder & wheat flour, resulting in a treat meant to evoke the pleasantly chewy texture of mochi rice cakes. Moffles?
Mochi waffles, freshly prepared to order, with seven varieties to choose from: Original (Milk), Chocolate, Banana, Green Tea, Coffee, Cranberry & Yoghurt. You can have one for RM5, with a side of fruits for RM7, or with fruits & gelato (in flavours like vanilla, double chocolate, peanut butter choc or black sesame) for RM13, or two waffles with two scoops of gelato for RM24. The waffles taste mellow & not too sweet (cranberry is perhaps the most distinctively punchy), with their crisp exteriors yielding to a bite balanced between fluffy-soft & sticky-smooth. Square Q’s founders, who first fell for these waffles in Taipei’s night markets, have fine-tuned their recipe over the past three years – they began selling the waffles at the food stalls of Plaza Mont Kiara’s weekly courtyard bazaar in 2012 before recently opening this cafe. Currently, the stall still operates every Thursday.
It may be worth heading here with two or three friends to share Square Q’s signature waffle platter, which showcases all seven flavours with two scoops of gelato & fruits galore (oranges, berries, kiwi fruit & bananas) for RM40. Waffles served individually weigh about 80 grammes each, while the waffles on the sharing platter are 45 grammes each. Bonus: these waffles could be considered more nutritious than the norm, with their high milk content helping to provide for protein & calcium requirements. They could be terrific for takeaways too; they’re served warm in-store but can reputedly retain their crunch for an hour or more.
Square Q also offers other non-waffle enticements, like the Q-Egg Toast (RM8), which comprises slices of baguettes soaked in egg & milk before being grilled for a souffle-like loveliness. For a wholesome snack, go for the yoghurt, mixed with muesli & topped with a generous amount of berries for just RM10. Beverages also prove distinctive, from bottles of La Mortuacienne French lemonade to Square Q’s own-made, rich-&-creamy Valrhona chocolate milkshake (RM14) & Half-&-Half Summer cool combination of cold espresso with hot chocolate (RM13). Many thanks to Square Q for having us here.
