Review: WIP on the Park

As we bid a fond farewell to 2015, we also say a sad goodbye to a diverse range of restaurants that ceased operations this year. Here, we pay tribute to 12 terrific places that we might miss the most.
For nearly 14 years, Frangipani was one of the city’s most ravishing and vibrant establishments. But Changkat Bukit Bintang’s grande dame called it a day in June, citing the changing face of the street, as well as escalating rental costs & other expenses, as its most pressing problems.
Damansara Uptown’s primary school-themed café wrapped up its final term in November, after two years of whipping up indelibly inventive temptations like the nasi lemak crème brulee. Thankfully, its main founder has teamed up with new collaborators to open a new café-bistro called Ampersand in Ecole P’s place.

One of KL’s most exuberantly imaginative Japanese restaurants said sayonara after six years; we’ll miss how Daikanyama tackled everything from Hong Kong fusion (teriyaki lo mai kai & century egg chawan mushi) to Indian (soft-shell-crab briyani temaki), Thai (tom yam wraps) & Mexican (salmon tataki quesadillas).

Following a landslide that struck its kitchen in November, La Vie En Rose’s main founder announced that its Raja Chulan location would be closed forever. The restaurant’s team has indicated that La Vie En Rose may eventually resurface elsewhere in the Klang Valley.

This was one of Telawi’s deservedly recommended spots for brunch & sweets for nearly three years. We still have flashbacks about Nosh’s signature dessert platter of Valrhona chocolate done three ways, in ice cream, molten cake & tart.
With the emergence of the new Batai Village development in Damansara Heights, the neighbourhood has gained several high-profile new restaurants, cafes and bars, but it lost Chez Rose, a quiet little haven where pickled herring, venison pot roast & ox tongue with apple-horseradish sauce ruled the roost for six years.
Perched on the rooftop of Life Centre, this was a leafy outdoor oasis where customers could feast on grilled meat & seafood in the shadow of the Kuala Lumpur Tower.

It was easy to spend a happy afternoon at Jac’s On The 8th, enjoying tasty, wholesome fare that ranged from egg-&-eggplant sandwiches with sesame mayo to buckwheat-&-cashew-nut granola with cold milk.

After two years, Bangsar bade adieu to this French-helmed crêperie that worked to spread the popularity of savoury galettes & dessert crepes.

Riblee’s had been slipping off the culinary radar in recent years, but for a very long time, it remained a worthy stomping ground for anyone hunting for porcine pleasures.
Madisons nurtured a reputation for more than three years as one of the Bangkung Row’s most reliable destinations for a satisfying dinner of potato gnocchi with candied pancetta, sous vide pork belly with lentils, & sweet rice pudding with fig compote.
Momos no more – Sri Hartamas’ sanctuary for Nepalese cuisine closed its doors permanently in mid-2015 after a two-year run.
