Review: WIP on the Park
April 28th, 2025
With about a week remaining till Ramadan begins, folks have started planning where to break their fast throughout the month. Those living or working in Petaling Jaya can consider The Local, where chef Othman Hasan & his team whip up wallet-friendly dinnertime delights, featuring many traditional favourites, in a fuss-free setting. Love the cheerful portraits on the outlet’s walls.
Three Ramadan sets are available, comprising portions for two (RM42++), four (RM90++) or six (RM135++), with completely different items in each set. The selection can be found at thelocal.com.my (see the promotions section).
Each set comes with one starter; we like the cucur udang (in the four-portion set) _ crispy, not greasy.
Four main courses are included in each set: the sotong sambal (in the two-portion set) is a worthwhile option for fans of seafood, with fresh slices of squid blanketed in thick, tangy sauce (spicy but not unbearably fiery).
Meat-lovers, have no fear; your choices range from tender mutton masala to rendang daging to ayam sambal madu.
Servings of nasi biryani surface in the six-portion set, with bowls of creamy ‘dalca’ vegetarian curry. Fibre-loaded components in the other sets include kerabu mangga & sayur kailan goreng, a tasty representation of the country’s multiple culinary cultures.
Pleasurably sticky-chewy ‘buah melaka’ rolled in grated coconut, or ‘onde-onde,’ is The Local’s recommended Ramadan dessert.
Throughout Ramadan, The Local’s regular a la carte menu remains available; the char kuey teow is competently executed, with lots of lovely little cockles to be found.
Chef Othman is from Kelantan, so he takes pride in the nasi kerabu with a hearty serving of savoury, lip-smacking ayam percik (offered on the a la carte menu, or available as part of a set lunch with beverage for an encouragingly reasonable RM12.50++).
Many thanks to the folks at The Local for hosting this meal.
