Review: WIP on the Park
April 28th, 2025
The soulful secrets of Sri Lankan cooking are waiting to be unearthed at an unlikely location, inside the students’ cafeteria of Monash University Malaysia: A friendly matriarch and her family run this stall where customers can savour a sublimely hearty plate that’s heaped with rice, devilled chicken, stewed tapioca, pumpkin curry, simmered lentils, mint sambol, fried bittergourd, grated coconut and banana blossoms for (wait for it) only RM10 – very possibly the most satisfying RM10 we’ve spent recently.
Honest flavours, textured food – you’ll relish each spoonful with gusto, recognising that the meal will stick in your memory for a long time. Add a serving of roti wrapped around spiced potatoes if it’s available; if the kitchen’s not too busy, it can also prepare kottu (chopped stir-fried flatbread) to order, though the main highlight is the customisable mixed rice platters.
Note that Monash University has strict security; try coming here with someone with access to the campus (a staff member or student), or if you’re in a large-enough group, make arrangements in advance with Rasai Machan to assist in escorting you inside.
