Review: WIP on the Park
April 28th, 2025
A one-of-a-kind playground for coffee connoisseurs: Beans Depot provides a potent brew of excitement and enlightenment for lovers of the latte lifestyle.
May 2014 Update: Beans Depot has moved to the Parklane Commercial Hub in Kelana Jaya.
Not exactly a cafe, but Beans Depot welcomes customers nevertheless, hidden in a house on a slope that shares its street with the Assunta secondary school.
Yip Leong Sum, whose most recent credentials include judging this year’s Malaysian Barista Championship, operates an oasis where wanderers might stumble on caffeinated salvation in a wasteland of watered-down beverages.
Single-origin beans galore populate this place; visitors can create blends of their choosing, experiment with brewing techniques and try their hand at being a barista. All the equipment here is at everyone’s disposal.
Or sit back and relax, like we did, asking Leong Sum to make us some coffee, please.
Here’s the kicker: Liquor lines the shelves, so feel free to request a coffee cocktail or two.
A bevy of beans, plenty of Patron and a lot of Amaretto, combine for the coolest concoction.
Kenyan single-origin and Malibu and Captain Morgan rum form an intriguingly creamy ice-blended, complete with coffee-infused ice cubes to boot.
Beans Depot is typically open for business on weekdays and some Saturdays through 4pm, but make certain to call before coming. Reservations are obligatory.
Beans Depot is also a coffee roaster, so head here and buy a packet to bring back.
Payment is generally by donation. Generosity will help this enterprise continue on its mission to explore strange new brews and seek out new beverages.
