You can view a list of our most recent new restaurant features here. This is part of a monthly series.
It’s been nearly a decade since Chai Chun Boon met his wife Zeehan Zahari while they were both living far from home; since then, he’s cooked everywhere from the Netherlands to Switzerland, Spain and Singapore, while she pursued her own cross-continental corporate career. Now, the couple have embarked on a mutual enterprise – a modern European eatery called Copper that’s a showcase for flair and finesse.

The story of Porcupine Place began when British-based surgeon Wen Huey left the medical profession, returned home to Malaysia and met Swiss-trained chef Jon Ng while they were both working at a French restaurant in KL. They fell in love, then decided a few years later to open this vibrant new restaurant together, making their own pastas and citrus curds, baking their own bread, curing their bacon, smoking their salmon and creating their own signature recipes with a playful sense of fun.
Address: B-3A-G, SetiaWalk, Persiaran Wawasan, 47160 Puchong

Unlike the murderous widow in ‘Sweeney Todd,’ this Mrs Lovett doesn’t dabble in suspicious pastries. Rest assured, the chicken pesto pie – filled with tender, flavoursome meat in thick, buttery crust, heaped with mashed potatoes and warm gravy – is on-key comfort food that’s easily lovable.
Address: LG 9-10, 1 Mont Kiara, Jalan Kiara

What makes Bedrock noteworthy is its mission to present interesting recipes that stray slightly from the norm. It’s rare to find kedgeree on the menu in the Klang Valley – Bedrock’s interpretation of this Anglo-Indian curried mixed-rice classic comes mingled with chicken and raisins, topped with boiled eggs, with an enjoyably smoky-spicy flavour.

Fatto A Mano – Italian for ‘made by hand’ – revs up KL’s recent renaissance of new Italian restaurants. The restaurant commands convincing credentials – at least two of its founders, including Frenchman Christophe Chatron-Michaud of Yeast, have some Italian blood running through their veins. Its menu was constructed with the help of Mediterranean cuisine maestro Riccardo Ferrarotti. And its Malaysian chef sharpened his skills at the now-closed il Lido, once our favourite Italian venue.

Not strictly a restaurant per se, but still worth eating at: Phang Sce Hwai spent the last 18 months cultivating more than 100 herbs, fruit trees and other plants in the compound of a rented bungalow that serves as her office space. Starting this month, Phang’s work has blossomed into a private kitchen where guests can go green every Saturday for breakfast and lunch. Expect nasi ulam made with herbs freshly harvested from the garden, thick jams made with mulberries foraged from around PJ, and ice cream made with durians, mangoes and passion fruit from Phang’s neighbours. Stroll around the house – papaya and fig trees share common ground with moringa plants and vines, nestled amid sawtooth coriander herbs and tenggek burung sprouts. Sustainability forms the core of Garden To Table’s philosophies – the chairs, tables and cupboards here are sourced from Amcorp Mall’s flea market or friends’ homes. Food scraps are turned into compost for Phang’s plants.

Bear with us for a bit of history in introducing this place: It begins with Malaysian filmmaker Au Tai Hon, who was a major fan of Solaris Dutamas’ Craft Bakers, which closed last November when its owners left KL. Au, a co-founder of the much-missed Yogitree at The Gardens, lost no time in hiring Craft Bakers’ head baker Johnny and secured the bakery’s recipes to nurture this new patisserie of his own in Bukit Tunku, calling it Kenny Hills Bakers, a nod to his neighbourhood’s old name.
Step inside and the irresistible fragrance of fresh baking might sweep you off your feet. Hand-crafted sourdough loaves, ciabatta bread and baguettes made with stone-ground organic flour share the showcase with croissants, scones and tarts, supplying a sensational excuse to indulge in the most satisfying of carbs.
This has the feel of a real community space, with customers from nearby strolling in and out, some buying bread to take home and others lingering over coffee. Seating is limited inside, so most folks will have to endure the heat outside – thankfully, it’s a calm and leafy setting. Kenny Hills Bakers has no signboard for now, so it still retains the charm of a hidden secret.
Address: I-1B, Taman Tunku, Off Langgak Tunku, Bukit Tunku
