With a tantalising tagline that promises “Grilling Under The Stars,” Bangoya reveals itself to be an alfresco izakaya on an atmospheric rooftop meant to evoke a sake-garden setting. Kushiyaki skewer-grilled & Yakiniku barbecued meat represent the terrific temptations of Bangoya, which translates into “night hut” – snatch a seat at a recycled pallet table & let the evening heat up with sticks of chicken liver, bishop’s nose, gizzard, wings, skin & meatballs, salted or teriyaki-style.

League of Captains occupies two floors on the former Asian Heritage Row; order at the street-level counter, head upstairs & take a seat either indoors & on an alfresco balcony with a leafy view of the offices across the street. It’s brief, cosy escape from the traffic & claustrophobia of the city, with great cakes and coffee to boot.
