Maldivian cuisine in Malaysia? Count us in: Veli (which means ‘sand’ in the Dhivehi language) offers not only a casual beachside vibe but a few flavoursome cornerstones of Male’s cooking. Tuna takes centre stage in this surprising venue in Subang, the foundation for mas huni (RM19.90; a typical breakfast of finely chopped tuna with grated coconut, complemented by roshi flatbread), mas riha (RM15.80; a thickly aromatic tuna curry that’s rich with herbs and spices) and kulhi mas (RM19,90; chilli tuna with harmonious notes of garlic and ginger). Distinctive flavours that make us long for an Indian Ocean island vacation.
