The Red Chamber at Taman OUG: Snapshot

Taman OUG’s new hideout for cocktails channels a sultry sense of old-world Oriental atmospherics, complete with furnishing that includes a vintage erhu bowed instrument and a canopy bed frame built in Shanghai in the 1970s. The soundtrack preserves the nostalgic mystique, buoyed by seven-decade-old serenades like Yao Lee’s The Spring Breeze Kisses My Face and Zhou Xuan’s Night Life in Shanghai, echoing through a crumbling shop-house setting.

It’s nice to finally see some potently pleasurable potions in this neighbourhood: The Red Chamber’s bartender Derrick has curated close to a dozen original cocktails, with playfully sensuous names like Mistress (vodka with rosemary and torched cinnamon), Playboy (with Earl Grey tea and smoked lavender) and Sleepless Nights (with peanut butter and a double shot of espresso). Well-crafted enough that residents of OUG no longer need to venture outside for their cocktail fix.
