Review: WIP on the Park
April 28th, 2025
Creative gateux in petite portions form the raison d’etre of this amiable new cafe helmed by Charmaine Ng (an alumna of Le Cordon Bleu Sydney), her husband & brother.
Expect thoughtfully nuanced cakes – our favourite’s the Cheesecake Duo, constructed with both baked & creamy no-bake layers, studded with a subtly delicious tomato jam, plus a cheese wafer for added crisp. The Golden Sunrise is worthwhile too, a gluten-free, flourless but flavourful cake filled with morsels of pumpkin, crowned with thick pumpkin cream. Each slice costs RM8; a recent opening promo provided for a complimentary hot beverage – say, a chai latte or a flat white (with beans from Solaris Dutamas’ HotShots) – with every purchase of two cakes.
Other highlights include the inventive Not Pavlova, featuring moist hazelnut meringue with lots of lemon curd to be enjoyed in between, topped with fresh fruits, & the Chocolate Three, a choc lover’s trinity of white choc mousse over milk choc fudge & dark choc cake – each cake we tried proved well-textured & expertly balanced, taste-wise. There are also smaller, daily-changing nibbles to be found, such as the dense salted egg yolk-flavoured friands, plus assorted fresh pastries & cookies.
If you crave a savoury meal, try the house-made Fat Bread, buttery & crusty, topped with smashed avo & hard-boiled egg (RM15). Pretty irresistible; to up the pleasure factor, ask for a dollop of hummus (RM3) to make each mouthful even richer.
