Review: WIP on the Park
April 28th, 2025
One of Subang’s most intriguing new cafes, 96 Degres is a cocoon of calm, adorned with artwork on every wall, rising above & beyond SS15’s overcrowded environs, spotlighting food with surprising flourishes, unflappably executed & persuasively priced.
95 Degres’ forte rests in conception & construction – the most palate-pleasing recipes here feature a myriad of ingredients, fine-tuned for harmonious flavours & finessed for satisfyingly elaborate textures. We love the vegetarian baked eggs, delicately nuanced in its dynamics, creamy & complex in its dimensions, layered with a medley of potatoes, jalapenos, zucchini, aubergines, crunchy almonds, sour cream, luscious mozzarella cheese & a light tomato sauce – a should-order for RM16.90.
Vegetarians & carnivores are catered for alike – angel hair pasta is complemented by a mellow mix of soft & smooth tofu, bean sprouts, poached egg & tobiko, tossed with roasted sesame seeds in Japanese-inspired goma sauce (RM17.90); a hug on a plate, as wholesome & well-prepared as anything in this neighbourhood.
It’s a marvellous meatless meal, but if you must have your half-pound of flesh, the chicken roll (RM17.90) is memorably inventive, built with chicken leg meat, stuffed with chicken mousse, cushioned by a lovely mash of potato & pumpkin on a bed of zucchini, crowned with house-made sweet potato chips
95 Degres does a distinctive French toast, a composition of whole-grain bread that retains its original nuances (not as sweet, eggy or custard-like as some versions), endowed with richness & character from a hodgepodge of strawberries, lychees, bananas, orange segments, almonds, wild honey & a unique caramel ginger syrup with a zing (RM15.90).
In a duel of desserts, we’d be torn in deciding between the toast & the luscious white chocolate mousse, striped & elevated with pistachios & mango (RM12.90), a final testament to how 95 Degres succeeds in managing its intricate creations with flair to spare.
Here’s where to discover coffee roasted by Australia’s Duke speciality roasters – the piccolo ranks among Subang’s most satisfying. There’s also hot chocolate, made with Melbourne’s Mork cocoa powder, tinged with dark milk chocolate, coconut blossom sugar & river salt, but its RM20 price tag might seem trickier to swallow. Corkage for wine is RM10 per person.
