Gorgeously customisable soft gelato sundaes at this new initiative by Cielo Dolci; choose a base – cup, handmade cone, orange crepe, giant choux, giant cookie or Belgian waffle; then select a soft-serve flavour – for now, it’s vanilla beans, raspberry cinnamon sorbetto, deep dark chocolate, salted caramel or a mix of two flavours – with toppings like caramel popcorn, cookie crumbs, cotton candy, lemon marshmallows, strawberry meringue & cheesecake crumbs, plus sauces that include butterscotch sesame, pandan kaya, chantilly cream, passion fruit compote, berries compote & chocolate fudge.

Malaysia’s pioneering outpost of Korean soft-serve ice cream specialist Milkcow is all about deliciously smooth, decadently dense but delicately mild-tasting ice cream, well-constructed with organic milk, wisely crowned with various toppings. We were sceptical about the popcorn-flavoured macaron & almond toppings, but the macaron turned out to be a triumph – winsomely fresh, well-balanced in flavour & finely tuned in texture.

Each cane – which can be snapped into two & shared – is stuffed with a choice of vanilla or chocolate (RM7). Or have both flavours, one on each end, for RM9.

Softsrve’s ice cream is presented to patrons, with lots of fog surging out of each serving, evocative of liquid nitrogen ice cream. Softsrve takes a leaf out of Momofuku Milk Bar’s book, bringing cereal milk ice cream – made with milk combined with corn flakes – from NYC to KL. It’s potentially an acquired taste, rather rich, but with a something of a powdery finish, texture-wise.
