Sushi Jiro encapsulates the virtues & vices of conveyor belt sushi – the variety here is vast & the prices prove less than punishing, but a meal at this Mid Valley mall newbie might leave some customers craving choicer cuts of seafood-topped rice.

It’s always fun to watch a merry-go-round of sushi, making impulsive decisions on what to seize & what to skip. We typically end up taking more than expected, but that’s OK at Sushi Jiro – for its opening promo, each plate of sushi costs RM2.99 nett (the rate will be raised to RM3.48 nett per plate – still relatively inexpensive for sushi – starting April 20).

Convenience

Convenience is the plus point – whether you pluck a plate of tuna sushi or eel sushi, seasoned seaweed or sweet bean curd, the nearly 100 possible items from the conveyor belt are all priced precisely alike. Everything we sampled seemed fair & fresh, commensurate with the cost, though very little leaves a lingering impression – the flavours remain muted & fleeting at best.

Creamy salmon-&-grated-yam & crispy boiled cherry shrimp gunkan maki, plus crunchy squid tentacle sushi with mayonnaise – these might be the more memorable highlights. Don’t see what you want on the conveyor belt? Order it from the service team.

Salmon

Lots for salmon lovers: Spicy salmon & seared belly sushi, plus sashimi slices, equivalent in quality to a buffet selection’s.

Boiled scallop sushi is worthwhile here, plump pieces crowned with the likes of mentaiko, cheese or black peppers – similar fast-food toppings come into play for the ‘abalone,’ crab stick & omelette sushi. We wrapped up with 17 plates that cost us a hair over RM50 – not a rip-off by any measure. But that name? Nope, Sushi Jiro has no ties to Tokyo sushi master Jiro Ono.
