Opening this month in Hartamas, Kuroha serves interesting recipes that make it one of 2013’s should-visits for KL’s fans of Japanese fare.
Begin with ‘nama hamu’ (RM17++), humbly called ‘homemade ham’ on Kuroha’s menu; it turns out to be luscious prosciutto, delicately sliced and topped with paper-thin radish strips, consumed with wasabi for a fun kick.
Melt-in-the-mouth mentaiko (RM13++) with a twist, mingled with garlic for additional aroma. A seductively savory dip with crunchy celery and cucumber.
No ordinary grilled cod fish, this one is seasoned with ‘sake kasu,’ the residual lees left over from sake production, for a singularly pungent flavor. RM28++.
Beef tendon braised with burdock (RM18++). Tastes better than it looks. Tender.
Even the sashimi is unique, with certain fish marinated with ‘kombu’ kelp for unexpected umami.
Thick cuts of tuna; a set of seven types of seafood (two pieces each) costs RM90++.
Kuroha makes its own soba; we might not be major fans of these buckwheat noodles, but it’s nevertheless worth ordering them when they’re well-prepared.
Savor the soba with a selection of tempura prawn, shishamo and veggies for RM32++.
Kuroha’s house sake is served in fun fashion, with the glass in the ‘masu’ wooden box.
As tradition sometimes dictates, the glass overflows, filling the box to represent abundance.
