This review is brought to you in part by Sitka.

It’s been close to two years now since Sitka first opened; if you haven’t been back in awhile, this could be the right time to return. The restaurant is going from strength to strength, increasingly empowered by its ensemble of emphatically talented and skilled chefs who’re capable of creating ambitious, above-average fare.

1. Sitka

Comfort food

Sitka recently introduced new recipes that set the benchmark for what brunch and desserts should aspire to be, relying on carefully sourced, compellingly assembled ingredients. For a comfort-food start to the day, check out the Chili Beef Porridge (RM25; a warm and wholesome hug in a bowl, creamy and textured with Scottish oats, wild rice, minced beef, 64-degree egg, pickled ginger and organic soy), or the Brisket Hash (RM25; with tender beef braised in Korean gochujang paste, partnered with sweet potatoes, potatoes, onions and a lightly spicy house-made hot sauce). Respectable prices for such elaborate concoctions.

Egg-centric breakfast and brunch

When it comes to waffles, eggs benny and burgers, Sitka also puts its own special touch on each. For the brunch menu (available everyday, 9am-3pm), customers can sample a buttermilk waffle layered with miso-marinated aubergines and portobello, a local bean stew of gingko, black and red beans, fried duck egg, crispy kale, mushroom ketchup and hot sauce (RM23), a choice of beef or lobster benny (the former is RM25, garnished with pickled mustard seeds, while the latter is RM28, with butter-poached slipper lobster; both come on dense kitchen-baked sourdough bread, blanketed with bearnaise sauce).

Rounding out the eggs-centric selection, the Breakfast Brioche boasts a lamb patty cushioned with a sweet-savoury duck jam, crowned with cheddar cheese and a ravishingly runny fried duck egg (RM23) for a cheerful, flavour-packed indulgence.

Delightful desserts

If you’re discerning about desserts, Sitka is a should-visit, showcasing definitively dreamy temptations with rich tenors of exacting complexities. We can’t decide which one we like best, so ordering everything is an option – the Ice Cream Sandwich (peanut butter ice cream with raspberry ripples and gel in walnut brownie slices),

White Chocolate Cream (whipped chocolate, evoking a light but still luscious sort of panna cotta, topped with crunchy-salty milk crumbs, wood sorrel and Thai basil oil)

and Dark Chocolate Creameux (decadent mousse-like pudding with honey-roasted crushed peanuts, grape gel and a touch of sea salt). They all taste as fine as they look, and that’s saying something, especially since each gorgeous serving chimes in at only RM24.

Signature drinks

Sitka’s prowess extends to its signature drinks – refreshing cold-brew tea spiked with house-made sodas and syrups in varieties like pineapple (nuanced with lime and cloves), mango (with kaffir and star anise) and lime (with vanilla and palm sugar), RM12 each.

There’s a confidently compact list of potent cocktails (Old-Fashioned, Negroni, Whisky Sour and Gin Basil, RM32-RM35) and wine (house pours are represented by an Argentine Malbec and Spanish Rioja, RM25/RM28). Thanks to Sitka for having us back.
