Review: Torito Peruvian Kitchen
January 23rd, 2025
Keen to curry favour with PJ’s foodies, Shokudo opened this week in Taman Paramount, run by a friendly band of Malaysians who have a yen for karē served with everything from tonkatsu to tori kara-age, buta yakiniku to ebi furai, korokke to omuretsu.
Brightly buoyant & colourfully chirpy, clean & clutter-free, this nifty neighbourhood hangout occupies the same street as Awesome Canteen. The vibe is similar: Shokudo’s a venue that takes pleasure in feeding its patrons & fulfilling their needs.
Shokudo’s selection comprises no fewer than 14 varieties of basic Japanese rice platters with thick, non-spicy curry sauce & options like pork cutlets, stir-fried chicken, deep-fried prawns, potato croquettes, vegetables or omelettes, mostly RM15 each.
Simple & satisfactory, frills-free & fuss-free, well-prepared & well-priced; lovely for a light lunch, convenient for a casual dinner.
Udon is available too, in curry broth that’s relatively less creamy, with stir-fried pork or chicken (RM15) or veggies (RM13).
Side dishes include beautiful sweet potatoes baked with butter (RM6), alongside the likes of chilled bean curd (RM4), marinated duck breast (RM8) & crab stick salad with sesame dressing (RM10), as well as almond pudding for dessert (RM4).
And if you’re fortunate, Shokudo’s staff members might even surprise you by sharing some cake they bought for themselves.
Shokudo’s still an oasis of calm for now, but we hope & think a healthy crowd will head here in the weeks to come.
