Nobu’s impressive culinary journey began 30 years ago, born from a unique partnership in 1994 between world-renowned chef Nobu Matsuhisa and legendary actor Robert De Niro. What started as a single restaurant in New York City has grown over the years into a global empire, celebrated for its innovative blend of traditional Japanese techniques with a Peruvian flair. Nobu’s distinctive approach to fine dining has attracted a devoted following, making it a culinary destination in cities around the world.

Nobu’s contemporary dining space at The Shoppes at Four Seasons Place

Nobu Kuala Lumpur first opened its doors in 2014 as Southeast Asia’s first Nobu, bringing this iconic dining experience to Malaysia’s capital. Having shifted a couple of years ago to The Shoppes at Four Seasons Place, Nobu KL now offers diners not just exquisite dishes, but also gorgeous views of the beautiful KLCC Park and the surrounding cityscape. Over the years, Nobu KL has established itself as a go-to for both locals and international diners, offering a refined dining experience that perfectly complements the city centre’s cosmopolitan flair.

Recently, Nobu KL has added a weekend lunch option to its popular menu. We dropped by on a sunny Saturday eager to check out the new offers. Diners can choose from a prix fixe menu (RM175) with a range of selections, an indulgent bento box option (RM230), a nice lunch set (RM75 and up), or – lest we forget – there’s always the à la carte route, too. Spoilt for choice, we took a bit of time to make our decisions (“One of everything” was sadly out of our budget) and got one prix fixe meal (three courses plus miso soup and green tea) and the bento box, which also comes with miso soup.

Suffice it to say, Nobu hasn’t lost a step since it arrived in KL. Executive Chef Phillip Leong recently welcomed a new sushi chef to the Nobu family, and the selection of nigiri and sashimi in our various dishes was, commensurately, outstanding. (You’ll never go wrong with the Yellowtail Tuna and Jalapeño sashimi here.)

Each of the three courses in the prix fixe menu comprises five choices; we struggled with the appetizer and mains selections because they all sounded so good. The bento option, comprising two stacked boxes laden with goodies, is much easier. Sashimi salad, miso soup, sushi, king crab tempura, tenderloin with truffle teriyaki, scallop wasabi with rice – you’ll not need to make any decisions as you get it all.

Nobu’s legendary signature dish, Black Cod Miso, makes an appearance on one of the set lunch options (RM160), and if you’ve never tried it, this is a good excuse to do so. All set lunches are served with miso soup, tempura, salad, and green tea. If desired, set lunches can also be ‘upgraded’ to include a dessert, from a choice of three, for RM20.

Nobu has a serviceable wine list, but where the restaurant really shines is for its outstanding selection of sakes, some of which are curated exclusively for Nobu. If you’re so inclined, we recommend asking the knowledgeable staff about the sake options and making this part of the meal.

There’s little question that for most patrons, Nobu is destination dining of a special nature, particularly for dinners. Even with lunch prices that are still on the high side, we think it’s worth it for the calibre and quality of the cuisine you’re getting, all served in such a classy, chic location. Set a date with Nobu for a weekend lunch and make it part of a city centre excursion like we did, and it will be a memorable day, without a doubt!
