Maxandcarl Kitchen at Ampang: Restaurant review

Thanks to its tagline ‘hipster kampung flavours,’ we couldn’t resist a visit to Maxandcarl: The top highlights here hail from Kelantan, owing more to tradition than trendiness, with recipes like nasi ulam (RM14.90; served with chicken), ikan singgang (RM14.90; with rice and omelette), laksam, colek ayam janda and siakap percik that might receive a rousing reception in Kota Bharu.

The kitchen puts effort into the preparation, the sauces pack a true punch, and prices feel sensible, though our preference would have been for many more herbs in the nasi ulam and a cleaner, less pungently fishy flavour for the ikan singgang.
