A happy hangout with heaps of heart & helpings of hog: Fork D World (love the humour in the name) is helmed by peppy home-cook-turned-restaurateur Jo-Ann, who’s enjoyed working in the kitchen ever since she was in primary school pinafores. Now she has a place of her own, whipping up honest comfort food with a heavy focus on pork produce (particularly bacon).

Bacon Bombs

Here’s the cookbook definition of ‘guilty pleasure’: Bacon Bombs (RM18), delivering a mini-explosion of gooey mozzarella wrapped in warm, bacon-blanketed crusty pastry, with a sweet current of brown sugar – the kind of billion-calorie side dish that would prove popular at a pizza parlour. Also made for mindless munching: Bacon Twists (RM18), featuring puff pastry sticks tangled with bacon & sharp cheddar, a savoury snack lightly spiced with cayenne pepper. Dieters should stop reading now.

Fare from Both West and East

Jo-Ann tackles fare from both West & East, including recipes she crafted herself & some from her grandmother. She likes deep, robust flavours, illustrated by her creamy-dreamy bolognese pasta, an Italian crowd-pleaser generously coated in minced pork, bacon chips & button mushrooms (RM20). If you prefer something more Malaysian, there’s economy mee hoon with a porky twist of bacon strips, plus a really lovely, runny sunny-side-up & very tasty kitchen-made sambal (RM8).

The menu goes on & on – pork rendang pie with boiled eggs & potatoes (RM8), bacon eggplant parmigiana (RM18) & baked eggs in bacon cups (RM18), plus a few non-pork offerings like beef stroganoff (RM23), salmon pot pie (RM18) & grilled Aussie lamb loin (RM35). Expect daily specials to help spice up the week – perhaps Mum’s Braised Pork Belly on Mondays, Granny’s Yao Mei Rice on Wednesdays & Pork Biryani on Fridays. Wash down with Strongbow Elderflower or Honey cider (RM15).
