Lai Po Heen at Mandarin Oriental Welcomes Chef Thomas Fong from Doha
April 24th, 2024
Steamed silkworm pupae, known as ‘beondegi,’ are the highlight at Solaris Mont Kiara’s Chi Mac Korean bistro – the light, delicate crunch of the skin yields to the squishy-juicy squirt of the pupa’s core, with a flavour that’s earthy-nutty, a bit like briny canned peas with a wet, woody odour.
Makgeolli is available if you need liquid courage before confronting the brown bowlful of beondegi soup (RM30), but if you truly can’t bear a bite of this protein-packed snack, take comfort that Chi Mac’s patrons mostly order the Korean fried chicken in flavours like garlic, pepper, green onions, soy or sweet-and-sour (RM48 a sharing plate).
