BarAtas at Telawi, Bangsar: Cocktail bar review

A playful streak permeates this cocktail bar, evident from the eclectic mix of fun flourishes scattered throughout this space. Glance at the wall and there’s a mural of a little girl flying a colourful Kelantanese wau; gaze up at the ceiling and you’ll notice a rusting bicycle suspended above the tables.

The food exhibits a sense of whimsy too – Malaysian-inspired fusion fare, including fettuccine chilli pan mee (RM8), spaghetti wantan noodles, stuffed eggs with ikan bilis sambal, fish and chips with assam sauce, and chicken chop with salted egg sauce, each priced below RM20, making BarAtas an affordable choice for a pre-drinks dinner. The local influence is unmistakable in the cocktails as well – the Cendol Atas (RM28) and Cold Fire ice lollies (RM20; a nostalgic childhood treat, filled here with a blend of tea and whisky) could be fine-tuned (one’s too frosty, the other’s too sweet), but this imaginative bar obviously has potential.
