7 Places to Find Craft Beers from Around the World in KL & Selangor

This one’s for all the beer fans out there who want to try their taste buds on some craft beers from around the world:

1. The Great Beer Bar

10. Basil Tapas Bar - Great Beer Bar craft beer selection

This is one of PJ’s favourite watering holes. The Great Beer Bar’s mission is to propagate craft beers and good food. The bar boasts its own kitchen that whips up things like Kristang-inspired baked prawns, spicy smoked mango salsa, and deep-fried broccoli – not the usually pub-grub.

Address: 86 Jalan SS 21/62, Damansara Utama, Petaling Jaya, Selangor

2. Takumi Craft Beer

Takumi seeks to spirit us away with a distinctive diversity of Japanese wine, beer and whisky, available for retail purchases or to imbibe at this gleaming bar on Isetan The Japan Store’s food market level. Stop by to sip on enjoyably easy-drinking glasses of vintages from Yamanashi’s Chateau Katsunuma, Tottori’s Hojyo Winery and Kyoto’s Tamba Wine. Raft beers are offered on draught at the bar, including through a tasting flight of three kinds.

Address: Isetan The Japan Store, Lower Ground Floor,, Lot 10, 50 Jalan Sultan Ismail, 50250 Kuala Lumpur

3. PAUS

Craft beer buffs pursuing their perfect pilsner might want to hunt down PAUS, captained by a band of Malaysians who hope to offer their fellow drinkers something a little different, focusing on the work of microbreweries from the Oceania region – Australia and New Zealand – instead of the Americas, with intentions to also explore fresh supplies from multiple Asian nations. PAUS – Malay for whale, the parlance for trophy beers that go beyond a generic IPA – is a casual, laid-back setting for a pleasant evening.

Address: 42a (1st Floor), Persiaran Zaaba, , Taman Tun Dr Ismail, 6000 Kuala Lumpur

4. Cellar Eighteen

Sharing a roof with Ingrained by Ironwood at Tropicana, Cellar Eighteen is a hub for wine, malts, craft beers and all sorts of spirits. We enjoyed browsing the vintages from around the world, and the venue’s friendly team proved perceptively insightful in helping us choose our bottle. Prices are very encouraging; sip your drink here (this two-level outlet includes dining spaces upstairs) or bring it back home.

Address: P-G-12, Tropicana Avenue , No.12, Jln Persiaran Tropicana, PJU3, Tropicana Golf & Country Resort, 47410 Petaling Jaya, Selangor

5. Taste of Love

15. Taste of Love-min

Asian comfort food forms the foundation of this unassumingly atmospheric cafe, occupying one of downtown KL’s backstreets. You can also find fun beverages here ranging from a butterfly pea flower latte to a selection of Taiwanese craft beers.

6. TIM: The Italian Market

Changkat Bukit Bintang’s coolest new venue tackles Italian cooking with a twist, spotlighting small plates for snacking and sharing. The drinks represent Italy pretty well – Italian craft beers are available, produced by two brothers in Tuscany; wrap up your meal with Bologna’s Amaro Montenegro – if you can’t make it to Italy, make Italy come to you at Tim.

Address: 32, Changkat Bukit Bintang, , Bukit Bintang, 50200 Kuala Lumpur

7. Gold Bar

Gold Bar has the potential to be a pleasant, laid-back hangout for craft beer and wine. For now though, the kitchen needs tweaks; we ordered one of the top temptations on the menu – beer siew yok – anticipating luscious roast pork bolstered perhaps by robust malty flavours.

Address: P-01-17 Tropicana Avenue, Petaling Jaya, Selangor
