Kuala Lumpur is a city with an eclectic and rich dining scene. Our ‘go-to’ eateries are generally the banana leaf stall at the end of our street, or the busy mamak stall near work. However, over the years, KL has seen a rise in fine dining. There are many outstanding places to visit, but here are a few of the best fine dining restaurants in KL.

1. Cantaloupe at Troika Sky Dining

Experience the genius of award-winning chef Christian Bauer in a room with a view at this French restaurant on the 23rd floor of The Troika building, overlooking KLCC Park and the Twin Towers. Soaring ceilings and elegant chandeliers create a sophisticated ambiance while the soft lighting gives warmth and softens the modern decor. Cantaloupe’s beautifully curated meals feature quality Wagyu beef, creamy fois gras, delicate butter-poached lobster and a selection of innovative desserts that double as an oeuvre d’art. This year’s Merdeka Day is set to be an exciting day for the restaurant; diners can go to enjoy an incredible spread of foods, along with a specially concocted ‘spicy tabasco granite and tomato foam vodka shooter’ at the ‘Big Sunday lunch’, all for only 120++ per person.

2. Bistro à Table

Australian- and French-trained Malaysian chef, Isadora Chai, proves that Kuala Lumpur’s homegrown talents are a force to be reckoned with when it comes to fine dining and foreign cuisine. Her restaurant, Bistro à Table, is tucked away in an unlikely location; deep in the residential area of Section 17. Orchids suspended in stylish glass globes and striking French prints hint at romance.  ‘A table!’; a common French expression to call family and friends to the table, perfectly represents the restaurant’s concept of communal dining and French comfort food. The single-page menu changes weekly and features a line-up of French classics with an inspired twist. Isadora’s signature starter of ‘maple syrup coddled egg with fleur de sel and crouton dust’ holds pride position on the menu and its sweet-and-salty flavours are much talked of amongst KL’s foodies. Be sure to save room for dessert; will you be brave enough to take on the ‘terribly alcoholic deconstructed tiramisu’?

Restaurant and wine bar Cilantro serves French-Japanese fusion cuisine with a focus on quality ingredients cooked with the appropriate method and seasoned correctly. Chef Takashi Kimura is a strong believer in this philosophy and creates memorable dishes that combine French elegance with Asian flavours. Comfortable cushioned seats and hues of beige and cream create a cosy and relaxed ambiance. Currently on the menu are a melt-in-the-mouth Wagyu beef tartare, a delicate Japanese sole with noisette butter and a light green tea bavarois with sweet kuromame. Freshly baked bread is always on offer, as is the French cheese platter; divinely pungent.
