Ted Boy Bakery

Brought to you by TedBoy, Breads are Baked with Love

It takes a stronger will power than mine to walk past the window of TedBoy Bakery without stepping inside, adorned as it is with freshly baked goodies. Once inside, the treasures multiply, and the smell of freshly brewed Bistot coffee, mingling with the aroma of freshly made pizzas and tangy salads, will be enough to tempt you from the pastry display to a table.

Doors may only have been open since July 2012, but TedBoy Bakery already attracts a core of return customers who come for the wholesome food and the warm welcome from a couple who run this charming bakery with a relaxed flair. Born out of a love for fine coffee and European-style baked products, TedBoy is a labour of love for Patrina and Edward, and is named after their other major love: their little boy Ted.

While the main portion of the light, bright bakery is taken up with items for take-away (loaves, rolls, pastries, cakes, cookies, and sandwiches), the walls carry personalised art works and the chalkboards bear the colourful detailing of a delicious menu that can be enjoyed at the side counter (complete with iPads and wifi) or at one of the little tables towards the back.

The treats start from breakfast, where breakfast platters or an oozingly delicious Ham Bagel (turkey ham, cheese, egg, lettuce, and tangy mayo) will start the day how it should be. Lunches can be light and lovely with one of the creative salads (the Classic Waldorf is a crunchy mix of leaves, apples, grapes, raisins, and walnuts) and a fibre-rich juice.

Sandwiches are made with door-stop slices of soft breads and packed with fillings – the Chicken Chili Tomato Sourdough is a serious treat – while Teddy’s Pizza suits those needing something hot, and the Juicy Wholemeal Burger (chicken or beef) is a tall, meaty meal made just like your Mum would make it; homemade bun and no scrimping on the caramalised onions and melting cheese.

Save some space for sweets though, as the cakes will call your name and the Danish pastries, especially the mini Belgian chocolate ones, can compete with the best in Europe. If you make lunch late enough you can enjoy the tea-time special of tea with a cake of the day for just RM9.90. Equally good value is the dinner set, which offers a gourmet sandwich, a salad or pizza, a soup, and two ice teas for RM45++.

There is something undeniably cosy about an hour or two spent at TedBoy, and even more warming than the Gryphon tea is the knowledge that supporting TedBoy supports a lovely little family with a passion for their product and a firm belief in doing things right: food is made fresh, nothing nasty is added, and anything left at the end of the day is taken to a nearby orphanage.
