This review is brought to you by Citrus Cafe & Restaurant
Amid the high-end boutiques and chic cafés in the upmarket Bangsar Village II sits an unassuming restaurant. That is, until lunchtime strikes. We plonked ourselves at a corner table in Citrus Café & Restaurant, and watched as every table filled up with eager diners, relieved they do not have to wait in the snaking line that has started to form.
Cosy yet stylish, with outstanding service and some of the friendliest staff I’ve ever encountered, Citrus is one of those places that will make you return for more. The extensive drinks menu calls for some time to pore over, but we settled on a refreshing Caribbean Cooler (a mix of orange, carrot, honey, and lemon), an Iced Lemon Tea Margarita, and a cucumber and mint drink called The Green Lady.
By this point, my inner foodie was positively salivating, so we began with the Seared Tiger Prawn salad, a heavenly salad combination if there ever was one. Rocket, cherry tomatoes, avocadoes, and basil made for a beautiful salad, topped with perfectly seared, succulent tiger prawns.
We moved on to the cheesy chicken quesadillas which, for lack of a better phrase, totally hit the spot. With sautéed onions and a hint of chili thrown in for good measure, it’s no surprise this particular dish was wiped clean in mere minutes!
Being of Pakistani and Singaporean descent, owner Shaesta Said wanted to incorporate a bit of her culture into the menu. Hence, the inclusion of the spicy yet flavoursome Chicken Curry Set, served with fluffy naan or chapatti.
In line with her Southeast Asian roots, Citrus’s Nasi Goreng Kampung represents the region well with its delectable mix of lightly fried rice, fragrant chicken rendang, fried anchovies, and quite possibly the best belacan I have ever sampled (a delicious chilli-prawn paste with garlic, ginger, and lime).
For those after a more fusion-friendly dish, the Chicken Tikka sandwich is the answer to your hunger pangs. Packed with perfectly marinated, meaty chicken breast slices, the spicy mayo between the layers of the dense bread adds a tangy kick to the mix.
Between running around and taking orders, Shaesta somehow manages to find the time to bake as well! We dug into her cake of the day, a decadent chocolate brownie, served with creamy vanilla ice cream, as well as a gorgeous lemon cake made that very morning by her mum, who was also busy holding down the fort during the busy lunch period.
With large portions that are more than enough to share, reasonable prices, great food and warm, welcoming service, I cannot think of a better place to relax and enjoy a delightful meal.
