Mezzanine at Kuchai Lama: Restaurant Review
Mezzanine ranks among Kuchai Lama’s most ambitious cafes for Western fare, illustrated by recipes that wouldn’t seem out of place in modern European cookbooks. This neighbourhood is more renowned for Chinese roast duck & noodles, so customers who chance on Mezzanine might be startled to see French-inflected pork cutlets with potato terrine, ratatouille & glazed carrots (RM25) or crispy pork belly with mashed potatoes & apple slaw (RM25), both competently executed.
The menu strives to strike an everything-to-everyone sort of resonance: Need a salad? Mezzanine will whip up a bowl of tomatoes, rocket leaves & mozzarella cheese balls with unexpected components of crispy pork lard & pork drippings (RM20). Want brunch? Brace your appetite for a big plate of scrambled eggs, sauteed mushrooms, stuffed tomato, bacon, pork sausage, potato lyonnaise & sourdough toast (RM25). Craving burgers? The kitchen does one with a braised pork belly patty topped with bacon (RM25). Some tweaking is still needed to maximise customer satisfaction, & several ingredients could be substituted or better seasoned, but the potential is there. Note: Wine isn’t available; bring a bottle – the corkage fee is minimal.
