Le P'tit Belge at Plaza Mont Kiara: Snapshot

This new Belgian restaurant brings a bit of Brussels to Mont Kiara, with a delicious dinner menu that spans cherished staples such as shrimp croquettes (RM29 nett), moules-frites (RM39-RM44 for half a kilogram, RM58-RM67 for a full kilogram; the mussels can be prepared simply with celery, onions and herbs, or in other styles including blue cheese, bacon and cream, or beer) and beautifully textured, juicy house-made pork meatballs in a dark beer sauce with stoemp (RM35).

The selection is compact, with husband-and-wife team Philippe and Liz Durant running a relatively small kitchen; for lunch, simpler spreads like a farmer’s breakfast of eggs and bacon with potatoes and bread are offered.  Still, a short chat with Liege-born Philippe (who formerly ran Penang’s Chez Nous cafe) makes it clear that he’s a passionate restaurateur who strives to support the neighbourhood; cheeses come from Malaysia’s own Milky Whey, whose Indonesian founder Annisa Iwan makes an excellent range of artisanal cheeses in her own home in Mont Kiara.

Of course, you’ll find Belgian beers at Le P’tit Beige; for a fun sampling of two distinctively different types, try the Blanche de Bruxelles (RM32) and Westmalle Trappist Double (RM42) while admiring the mural of Tintin, Snowy and Captain Haddock.
