The ‘Eat Clean’ movement has gathered massive momentum in the past year, with numerous new delivery services that promise wholesome lunch boxes sent straight to customers’ offices & homes. We recently tried out the offerings of HappyTime Kitchen, an initiative by a team of Malaysian health coaches.

Selection That Changes Everyday

HappyTime dispatches its food Mondays through Fridays to the surroundings of Kuala Lumpur’s city centre & Bangsar, with a selection that changes everyday, ranging from the likes of garlic-baked salmon to tomato-cooked chicken breast, black pepper beef to crispy tofu, costing mostly between RM11.90 & RM13.90 per fairly priced box for pre-orders.

Capably Executed Hearty Meals

We like how each box is packed with plenty of components, complex enough to make them nutritionally fulfilling. Meat, grains, nuts, boiled eggs & veggies – everything still tasted satisfyingly fresh when we consumed this an hour after obtaining our order. The hearty meals are capably executed, so the protein remains moist & the fibre isn’t distressingly limp or soggy.

Flavour-wise, HappyTime has space for fine-tuning. Since these recipes rely on less salt, sugar & oil, the kitchen needs to work on herbs, spices & various seasonings to bring out the flavours of its fare. While these meals aren’t exactly bland, they’re not quite memorably punchy enough either so far. But HappyTime is open to feedback, so we’re optimistic things will improve.

Lunches Below RM15

It’s likely that some customers might demand a diversity of more interesting ingredients in these boxes as the weeks go by. Others might seek free-range poultry, sustainably caught fish & organic vegetables, but those will cause costs to escalate. For now, HappyTime seems to be targeting customers whose budget restricts them to lunches below RM15.
