Great Hall at Skypark, One City USJ: Restaurant review

In what seems like a hipster restaurant-and-bar’s tongue-in-cheek take on Chairman Mao’s revolutionary spirit, Great Hall weaves mainland Chinese inspirations with modern culinary inflections to create a distinctively surreal F&B experience – customers can order whimsical recipes like ‘Mao’s Mushroom Moustache’ and ‘Mao & His Chips’ while being served by a team wearing five-pointed red star caps amid murals that evoke pastiches of 1950s-era Great Leap Forward cultural propaganda.

East and West

The menu mixes and matches East and West – Oriental pork stew is stir-fried with Italian angel hair pasta (RM14.90) while duck confit is coupled with steamed rice and vegetables in a dark sauce (RM18.90); the price is right for these comfort-food offerings. The top bet for dessert is banquet-style osmanthus jelly turned into a Euro confection with ginger lemongrass cream (RM6.90).

Cocktails

Cocktails here will seize attention – Mao’s Chamber (RM80) and Nu Er Hong (RM60; each serving is suitable for two to four persons) both blend rice wine with sweet fruits to create visually conspicuous beverages constructed for the social media age.
