Today, Glenfiddich, of family-owned distiller and distributor William Grant & Sons, unveils their special Chinese New Year 21 Year old Single Malt in an imaginative gift pack designed by the up-and-coming Chinese illustrator Rlon Wang. The limited edition bottle is perfect to bring home to share with relatives, or as a gift to friends and business partners.

The second in a series of three Chinese New Year special edition packs, the 2021 bottle tells a magical story of ‘The Great Homecoming’, inspired by the inimitable feeling of returning home to family for Chinese New Year. The story follows on from 2020’s much-loved edition, where artist Wang first reimagined the royal stag icon and the century-old epic journey of Charles Gordon (son-in-law of Glenfiddich founder William Grant) where he embarked for Asia with a few cases of whisky and a dream to bring the Speyside Scotch whisky to the world. The 2021 special edition bottle honours his triumphant return home to Scotland a year later, having won the hearts of whisky lovers across Asia.

Nigel Ng, Head of Brand Marketing for South East Asia at William Grant & Sons says: “‘The Great Homecoming’ is an apt sentiment for Lunar New Year, a festive period that inspires the biggest global annual human migration, with people travelling countless miles homeward to see loved ones and celebrate together. In a year when this migration may not be possible for all, we honour festive memories with families and traditions past, while looking towards a future full of promise. We’re proud to work with Rlon Wang once again to bring to life the maverick spirit at the heart of what we do in his signature bold, imaginative and vivid way.”

A student of traditional Chinese painting, Wang’s unique designs marry visual elements from the East and West. Using multi-layered illustrations, he tells a rich story created especially for Glenfiddich. At the centrepiece is the majestic stag with its auspicious symbolism of long-life and prosperity; surrounding him is a dynamic scene of people making their journey home by road, rail, air and sea. His images burst with vibrant colour and thoughtful detail. Hidden gems waiting to be spotted include dancing lions and whisky-carrying birds, as well as playful touches such as precious casks being transported by hot air balloons.

Wang says: “I wanted to tell a story that evokes the warmth and excitement of Lunar New Year – the irreplaceable feeling and anticipation of finally coming home to loved ones. Inspired by the Glenfiddich spirit of experimentation and adventure, I created an illustration that comes alive with symbols of generations old and new. I loved playing with the symbiosis of Chinese and Scottish cultures – two connected countries on opposite sides of the world.”
