Founded by three longtime friends Dinesh, Sam and Reagan, Eighty9 telegraphs a sense of playful personality through its menu – bak-kut-teh-inspired pork ribs with herbal nuances come paired with sour Chinese cabbage and pan-fried mushrooms in a neat twist on BKT (RM29), while a cream of watercress soup with salty-smoky dynamics (RM9) and deep-fried dumplings stuffed with crab meat, crab sticks and house-made citrus-laced ricotta cheese (RM12) deliver interesting reinterpretations of flavours that’ll feel both familiar and fresh.
Wash down with a sawi-nanas blended beverage or wine. Service is warm and prices are fair, making Eighty9 a nice example of a worthwhile neighbourhood restaurant.
