Take a trip south of the Mason-Dixie line, down on the bayou: BRYCG (pronounced ‘bridge’)  New Orleans Cuisine tries to bring a bit of The Big Easy to Kuala Lumpur, serving up the vibrant flavours of Louisiana Creole cooking, plus a side helping of Tex-Mex favourites that stick more or less to a southern U.S. culinary theme.

Laissez les bons temps rouler! Get comfy at this outlet on the upper level of Ampang’s Greenhouse by Muir complex & brace for a belly-busting meal that’ll begin with complimentary beignets (fried pastries – crisp, puffy & hollow – with powdered sugar).

Gumbo

Order the gumbo first (RM29.68) – the ideal introduction to the soul food here, a hot stew of rice, tiger prawns & flower crabs soaked in thick, savoury seafood stock. While it’s impossible for BRYCG to completely replicate the complex nuances of the French Quarter’s cooking, this is a respectable effort that strives for a fair measure of authenticity. Southern comfort, indeed.

Jambalaya

Of course, there’s jambalaya too (RM33.92), the cousin of paella; BRYCG serves a shrimp-packed, nicely seasoned rendition with okra, capsicum & spring onions. You’ll also find shrimp & grits (creamy ground maize) on the menu, but we opted instead for grits that were unusually but very satisfyingly partnered with a succulent lamb shank in Mexican-inspired dark mole sauce.

Oysters

Oysters feature prominently at BRYCG – our best bet is the fried oyster salad (RM29.68) that’s absolutely delicious with avocado dressing, quail eggs, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes & parmesan cheese. There’s also a fried oyster sandwich (the closest thing to a classic po’boy in KL), but if you’re heading to BRYCG by August 7, it may be worth noting a seafood platter with oysters, prawns & assorted salads is available at an opening promo price of RM63.60 instead of the usual RM125.08.

DIY Fish Tacos

Some of BRYCG’s offerings may seem to stray south of the U.S. border, but even so, many of these have become staples of the American food truck scene. We had fun with the DIY fish tacos (RM30.76; made with marinated red snapper – enjoyable to both assemble & eat), the meaty Cuban sandwich (RM25.44; layered with chicken, salsa, cheddar cheese, chipotle mayo & dijon mustard, served with tapioca chips) & the hearty choripan (RM29.68; essentially a hearty hot dog with chimmichurri). Douse with some fiery-red original Louisiana hot sauce (the real deal, with the tell-tale red dot) to bring it all back home, cher.

Dessert

The two of us were too stuffed for dessert, but rest assured, customers can expect the expected: Bananas foster (RM16.96), as well as lime pie (RM15.90), bread pudding (RM19.08), creme brulee (RM15.90) & churros with dulce de leche (RM15.90).
