This post is brought to you by Brussels Beer Cafe.

It was beer, unsurprisingly, that propelled Brussels Beer Café to its early success. Starting from one outlet in Jaya One back in 2008, Brussels quickly became a popular watering hole and built its name and its reputation on its beer offerings, perhaps none more so than draught Hoegaarden beer. Today, that early success has been parlayed into a string of outlets from Penang to Johor, and now, it’s become more than just a place to get a cold beer and bar bites. A full menu, reflecting the Belgian heritage the café is built on, offers a grand selection of appetizers, entrées, and desserts.

Brussels Fried Meatballs

We popped in to the Solaris Mont Kiara outlet recently to sample some dishes from their new menu. Brussels Beer Café is pork-friendly, so you’ll find a nice selection of porky treats to choose from here. We started with the Brussels Fried Meatballs, a generous portion of bite-sized, homemade pork meatballs served with a spicy dipping sauce. Nothing fancy here, but this is something we’d order again and again – certainly an ideal bar food to complement our cold beers.

Steamed Mussels

One outstanding offering at Brussels is their pots of steamed mussels. Available in an array of flavour combinations, these air-flown, imported mussels are great to share. Try the Moules Provençales, cooked with bacon, sundried tomatoes, herbs, and wine, or perhaps the Moules Hoegaarden, steamed with coriander, celery, lemon zest, and Hoegaarden beer. All the mussels pots are served with a generous pile of crispy thick-cut steak fries, too. Grab a couple of friends, order a pot of mussels and a pint of beer for everyone, and let the good times roll.

Pan-seared Cod Fish

For mains, you can go for a burger (beef or pork), bratwurst, a selection of pasta dishes, lamb, braised pork belly, an excellent rib-eye steak, or our favourite this time, the pan-seared cod fish. Absolutely delicious, perfectly cooked, the flaky white fish was well-complemented by buttered veggies and a mound of stoemp, a delectable Belgian potato mash with crumbled bacon, herbs, and onions.

Beer

Of course, beer takes centre stage at a place called Brussels Beer Café, and aficionados can choose from an outstanding range of Belgian beers (and others), including Hoegaarden White, Stella Artois, Leffe Blonde, Leffe Brune, the dark Grimbergen Ambrée, and the fruity and refreshing Hoegaarden Rosée, something we had never seen before. Similar to the style of regular Hoegaarden, the Rosée variant adds an infusion of zesty raspberries and a hint of spice. The alcohol content is a bit lower, too, so on a hot day – or for beer neophytes – this is a terrific choice. Ciders, stouts, ales, and a range of imported bottled beers are available, too. The selection of draught and bottled beers varies a bit from outlet to outlet.

If you haven’t tried Brussels, by all means, find one of their many locations and see what they have to offer. The new menu is full of temptations, and we found the food tasty, reasonably priced, and beautifully presented. Set lunches are also available at very attractive prices, and there are excellent Ladies’ Night specials every Wednesday, too.
