This promising new cafe is spearheaded by Nicholas, a young entrepreneur whose parents have been in the F&B business for two decades. Perched on a shop-house first floor, Bedrock is located near Nicholas’ home & his family’s traditional coffee shop in the Taipan commercial hub, removed from Subang’s main cafe enclave of SS15.

Anglo-Indian Curried Mixed-Rice Classic

What makes Bedrock noteworthy is its mission to present interesting recipes that stray slightly from the norm. It’s rare to find kedgeree on the menu in the Klang Valley – Bedrock’s interpretation of this Anglo-Indian curried mixed-rice classic comes mingled with chicken & raisins, topped with boiled eggs, with an enjoyably smoky-spicy flavour. For RM12, easy to endorse.

Baked Eggs

Baked eggs also secure a twist at Bedrock, prepared shakshouka-style, ravishingly runny with sliced chicken frankfurters, cherry tomatoes, bell peppers, herbs & a surprising side of yoghurt that’s meant to endow an extra dimension to this dish. RM15, reflective of Bedrock’s reasonable rates.

Freshly Baked Bread Topped With Scrambled Eggs

Some of Bedrock’s offerings could still benefit from fine-tuning though – its freshly baked bread comes topped with scrambled eggs & a mix of mushrooms, spring onions & vinaigrette that may not be quite as aromatic or flavoursome as expected. RM12.

Signature Salt Chicken

Bedrock’s signature recommendation is deservedly its salt chicken, brined & roasted, beautifully tender & boldly tasty. RM18; this generous serving is sufficient even for hearty eaters, bolstered further by a mashed potato salad. Limited portions daily.

Pasta

Pastas here steer clear of the bolognese/carbonara cliches – Bedrock offers a pleasant linguine primavera with chicken, cherry tomatoes, capsicum & parmesan cheese (RM15), plus a likeable linguine pesto with chicken, house-made pesto sauce & pine nuts (also RM15). Both boast something of a home-cooked feel.

Own-Made Ice Cream

Bedrock’s desserts come crowned with the cafe’s own-made ice cream, in vanilla or peanut butter flavour (we prefer the latter, which flaunts a light but distinct sweet-saltiness). In terms of textural satisfaction, the pancakes with bananas & chocolate sauce (RM12) trump the French toast, overloaded with grilled bananas, crushed almonds, chocolate & strawberry jam (RM16).

Coffee

And of course, there’s coffee at Bedrock – by the way, we like the explanation for the cafe’s name, evoking a sense of being grounded in core values. Many thanks to Nicholas & the Bedrock team for hosting this visit.
