Lai Po Heen at Mandarin Oriental Welcomes Chef Thomas Fong from Doha

Sri Hartamas’ latest restaurant makes lovely use of its sprawling space, comfortably catering to more than a hundred customers in a bright, leafy setting. Its extensive menu is another attraction; patrons can eat their way through from eggs en cocotte to slow-cooked beef ribs, served with contemporary flourishes.
Highlights span both East and West, from hearty rice-with-salad bowls topped with pan-seared salmon, avocado and furikake seasoning (RM35) or sweet-sour ox tongue with egg (RM38) to a whole duck confit leg with waffles, tomatoes, caramelised onions and a thick helping of truffle butter (RM40). If in doubt, order the duck, which scores solid points for sheer succulence.
What we liked best at Ate_Cetera was the yam tiramisu, delicately creamy and deliciously flavoured, strikingly served in a dim sum basket (RM24). The fruits-crowned charcoal pavlova is a interesting creation that colourfully illustrates how the restaurant has lavished a lot of thought and effort on its menu, though the overall effect might be a tad too sweet for some (RM19). The coffee here also showcases a sense of fun; the popcorn hot latte and cincau iced latte are both enjoyable.
