Follow the bright-red bus to Brolly, a restaurant that brims with colour, character & charm – showcasing nine kitchens in one venue, this adventurous new effort offers an eclectic exploration of cross-border cuisines, from the bayous of Louisiana to the izakayas of Tokyo & street stalls of Shanghai, curated by Brolly’s founders from their own intimately personal experiences.

2. Stoked at Medan Damansara

Stoked fans the embers of a scorching-hot new era for KL’s long-venerated Vintry group, with a rustic elegance that evokes a French wine cellar & an oven-powered oeuvre that sparkles with steaks, seafood & possibly the best sticky date pudding in Malaysia. This may be Asia’s first restaurant to bank on Bertha, a British-built, cast-iron, charcoal-&-wood-fired oven that fuels meat-loving establishments across England.

3. Softcore at Bandar Sunway

Softcore delivers what its name suggests, dishing out an intriguingly diverse range of lava cakes with molten centres. This is one of Bandar Sunway’s brightest, most cheerful & promising new cafes, helmed by chef Tommy, Gerald & Sham, a young & enthusiastic team whose resumes include stints at respected Singapore-based outlets like Brussels Sprouts & Original Sin.

4. Real Food at 1 Mont Kiara

Real Food started out in Singapore, where it now has three outposts, before launching its first Malaysian branch at Penang’s Straits Quay in 2013. This month, it finally reaches KL, determined to draw health-concerned consumers with wholesome highlights like pumpkin pancakes with vegan brown rice milk ice cream, miso mulukhiyah soy noodles, claypot baked quinoa, kombucha iced tea & kale-apple smoothies.

5. Vanilla Sky at G Village

The name G Village might not ring any bells right now, but this residential & retail complex is poised to become a hotbed of restaurants. The first eatery to launch on its leafy street-level front, a few kilometres from the city centre, is Vanilla Sky, brought to KL by the Kuching-based founders of Sarawak’s Jambu boutique restaurant, fusing Borneo’s ingredients & inspiration into international recipes.

6. Steaks & Lobsters at Desa Sri Hartamas

17. Wild Sheep Chase at Taman Desa

A novel by Haruki Murakami, one of Chris &Sujian’s favourite authors, as well as allusion to how the two Malaysians are pursuing their dreams in the Year of the Sheep by opening their own cafe, inspired by their travels in Taiwan & Japan.And, it’s a shout-out to the couple’s affectionate nicknames for each other: Silly Kambing. Silly Sheep.
