1. Brolly at Menara Felda

Follow the bright-red bus to Brolly, a restaurant that brims with colour, character & charm – showcasing nine kitchens in one venue, this adventurous new effort offers an eclectic exploration of cross-border cuisines, from the bayous of Louisiana to the izakayas of Tokyo & street stalls of Shanghai, curated by Brolly’s founders from their own intimately personal experiences.

2. Stoked at Medan Damansara

Stoked fans the embers of a scorching-hot new era for KL’s long-venerated Vintry group, with a rustic elegance that evokes a French wine cellar & an oven-powered oeuvre that sparkles with steaks, seafood & possibly the best sticky date pudding in Malaysia. This may be Asia’s first restaurant to bank on Bertha, a British-built, cast-iron, charcoal-&-wood-fired oven that fuels meat-loving establishments across England.

3. Softcore at Bandar Sunway

Softcore delivers what its name suggests, dishing out an intriguingly diverse range of lava cakes with molten centres. This is one of Bandar Sunway’s brightest, most cheerful & promising new cafes, helmed by chef Tommy, Gerald & Sham, a young & enthusiastic team whose resumes include stints at respected Singapore-based outlets like Brussels Sprouts & Original Sin.

4. Real Food at 1 Mont Kiara

Real Food started out in Singapore, where it now has three outposts, before launching its first Malaysian branch at Penang’s Straits Quay in 2013. This month, it finally reaches KL, determined to draw health-concerned consumers with wholesome highlights like pumpkin pancakes with vegan brown rice milk ice cream, miso mulukhiyah soy noodles, claypot baked quinoa, kombucha iced tea & kale-apple smoothies.

5. Vanilla Sky at G Village

The name G Village might not ring any bells right now, but this residential & retail complex is poised to become a hotbed of restaurants. The first eatery to launch on its leafy street-level front, a few kilometres from the city centre, is Vanilla Sky, brought to KL by the Kuching-based founders of Sarawak’s Jambu boutique restaurant, fusing Borneo’s ingredients & inspiration into international recipes.

6. Steaks & Lobsters at Desa Sri Hartamas

Desa Sri Hartamas might seem to have everything, from Japanese sushi bars & Korean barbecue joints to Italian pizza parlours & German beer gardens, burgers & pork ribs to cakes & cocktails, but it’s never had a real surf-&-turf specialist before this month. With a no-nonsense name like Steaks & Lobsters, customers know exactly what the protein-powered game is here.

7. Bowery Petit at Taman Tun Dr Ismail

Monkey bread, bagel balls, frozen custard & pizzas by the slice: A made-in-Manhattan fervour rules TTDI’s vibrant new Bowery Petit pizzeria & pastry shop, named by its NYC-loving founders after the Lower East Side neighbourhood.

8. Fifth Palate at Kota Damansara

Fifth Palate has the potential to be a first-rate family-run restaurant – Timmy Ng keeps the kitchen humming, while his sister Caryne ensures customers secure warm service & their dad Dennis prepares home-made yoghurt & chutneys to complement an easily enjoyable meal here.

9. The Fat Fish at Mont Kiara

10. Manmaru Robatayaki at Atria Shopping Gallery

Our best bet for Japanese gastronomy at Damansara Jaya’s revamped Atria Shopping Gallery is Manmaru, thanks to the inventive flair & inspiring artistry of Executive Chef Danny Leow, a passionate craftsman who’s sharpened his skills at some of Kuala Lumpur’s most respected Japanese establishments of the past 15 years, including Ozeki Tokyo, Yuzu & Sagano.

11. Ice Dreams Café at Damansara Kim

Everyone’s a kid again at this dessert parlour that relies on New Zealand’s Kapiti ice cream to create impishly playful desserts – No-Coffee Affogato with vanilla ice cream laced with sea salt flakes, topped with a shot of extra virgin olive oil; lavender & cranberry-infused Welsh cakes with Black Doris plum ice cream, drizzled honey & peppercorn sprinkles; funnel cakes, crepes, waffles & more.

12. Fork D World at Damansara Perdana

A happy hangout with heaps of heart & helpings of hog: Fork D World (love the humour in the name) is helmed by peppy home-cook-turned-restaurateur Jo-Ann, who’s enjoyed working in the kitchen ever since she was in primary school pinafores. Now she has a place of her own, whipping up honest comfort food with a heavy focus on pork produce (particularly bacon).

13. Green Dot Stables at Centrepoint

What happens when a sandwich bar from Detroit that’s notorious for offbeat offerings opts to open an outpost in Malaysia? 14. Nara Kitchen & Co at Damansara Uptown

Nara mostly lives up to its moniker – a Greek girl’s name that means ‘happy’ – with brightly upbeat vibes & a sprightly selection of feel-good food that might make it one of Damansara Uptown’s most fashionable weekend destinations in the months ahead.

15. Sasagawa at Sheraton Imperial Hotel

Sasagawa tackles the traditions of Japanese cuisine with confidence; the restaurant borrows its name from its head chef Hitoshi Sasagawa, trained by Tadamichi Ota, an Iron Chef challenger & the former vice president of the All Japan Chefs Association. Here, the pupil strives to become the master, with promising results.

17. Wild Sheep Chase at Taman Desa

Wild Sheep Chase is many things. A novel by Haruki Murakami, one of Chris &Sujian’s favourite authors, as well as allusion to how the two Malaysians are pursuing their dreams in the Year of the Sheep by opening their own cafe, inspired by their travels in Taiwan & Japan.And, it’s a shout-out to the couple’s affectionate nicknames for each other: Silly Kambing. Silly Sheep.
