4. Huckleberry After Dark

By night, Huckleberry After Dark’s kitchen swaps brunch fare for the likes of Tex-Mex specialities. Among the tacos, choose from battered fish with slaw, jalapenos and pico de gallo or BBQ beef with coriander and sour cream, best paired with one of the outlet’s Margarita-inspired creations.

3. Lou Shang Bar, Damansara Utama

Lou_Shang_Bar_and_Cafe_at_Damansara_Uptown_Restaurant_Review8

Lou Shang’s fusion tacos are vividly imaginative and vibrantly complex. One of the knock-outs this past year has been the ‘Canto-Pop’ taco, with kitchen-made pork char siu that lands a salty punch, pickled apple and cabbage slaw for a zesty slap, and spicy kewpie mayo for a tongue-tingling kick.

Address: 10M, First Floor, Jalan SS21/58, Damansara Utama, Petaling Jaya

4. Loco, Bukit Bintang

loco

Changkat Bukit Bintang’s reliable hangout for Mexican marvels: It’s been several years now since we had it, but we still have fond memories of the Loco’s chicken tacos _ soft corn tortillas, folded with refried beans and lettuce, served with salsa arobal (toasted pecan nuts, dried red chili salsa and lime). All salsas are made fresh in Loco’s kitchen.

8. Panchos, Mid Valley

6_Panchos Mexican Taqueria at Mid Valley

Panchos does justice to the fundamentals of a taco shop – customers can choose from soft flour tortillas or crispy shell corn versions, filled with one of the following five – smoky chipotle slow-roasted pulled beef, slow-braised sweet-sticky beef brisket, flame-grilled herb chicken, picante chilli chicken or pan-fried fish – plus pico de gallo, lettuce, sour cream, cheese and lime. Convincingly textured, with an unmistakable vitality in taste that’s a testament to Panchos’ kitchen-produced marinades and fillings, which reputedly include pinto beans from Mexico, made-from-scratch salsa and market-fresh tomatoes, cilantro and onions.
